TRANSIT MAFIA Interview - Stealth 6th Brithday

Transit Mafia is the promoter and resident DJ of Stealth's longest running night - Detonate. The night, which focuses on Drum & Bass, Dubstep & Hip-Hop, has been running on a monthly basis since 2004, and as a DJ he has probably played at Stealth more times than any other. He is playing at the Stealth 6th Birthday event this Friday alongside one of the hottest DJ duos in Dubstep & Drum & Bass - NERO.

How long ago did you start djing?
I started DJing about 13 years ago.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Musical Youth - Youth of Today LP.
And what was the last record (or track) you bought?
Scuba - Triangulation
Who were your main inspirations that got you into djing & production?
I first got into listening to techno DJ's like Dave Angel, Luke Slater, Dave Clarke and people like that. Drum & Bass wise Randall, Doc Scott and some of the Bristol lot were what got me into it.
How many records are in your collection?
A large room full. I try to get rid of some occasionally but end of not being able to part with them.
What are your 3 most played tracks at the moment?
Xenomorph - S.P.Y
Fade Away - Lenzman
Red Lines - Total Science
What do you do when you are not djing / producing?
Promote Detonate, help run our pub - The Golden Fleece, get beaten at squash, watch Nottingham Forest.
What is your biggest fear?
My serato breaking down. I've not been using it long and still have that moment every gig when i don't think it's going to work.
Stealth is 6 years old this Friday. What did you do on your 6th birthday?
I think I had a party which involved musical chairs with my dad playing the piano instead of stopping and starting a record.
If you could pick 3 Dj's (past or present) to play at your party who would you pick?
This is kind of what I do every week with Detonate, but I guess Marky, Calibre, and David Rodigan probably. Doc Scott in 1995 as well. Zinc in 2000, Ed Rush in '98.
What is your favourite memory of Stealth?
On our 10th Birthday Detonate did a Sunday night with Marky, Benga and Breakage. It was one of those nights which just went off. Marky played for around 4hrs dropping Michael Jackson, Nirvana and loads of random stuff, and Rich Detonate and MC Lowqui stage dived out of the upstairs booth.

What 5 tracks stand out as your favorites from your sets at Stealth?

Big tunes of the last 6 years at Detonate include:

Back to your Roots - Friction & K-Tee remix
Number One - Die & Clipz
Together VIP - Logistics
In Love - Jenna G
If We Ever - High Contrast
What has been your favourite night at Stealth?
Probably the 10th Birthday with Marky, Benga and Breakage.
What has been your funniest moment in Stealth?
Kath Detonate having a some sort of karate fight with Andy C's driver and kicking the amps off during his set. Wasn't that funny at the time though.
