PHAELEH (Disfigured Dubs) at Stealth (06/05/11)

Friday 6th May, 2011

PHAELEH (Disfigured Dubs / Wheel & Deal) ★
Phaeleh – pronounced “Fella”
In 2006, classically trained musician and electronic sound scientist Matt Preston was swept up in the wake of the Dubstep phenomenon. His diverse influences resulted in an equally diverse musical output, ranging from the euphoric heights of Nordic electronica through cinematic breakbeat to the depth charges of Dubstep.

Phaeleh - Outlook Mix by outlookfestival

Phaeleh’s unique sound has garnered support from the scene’s leading artists, including Skream, N-Type, Scuba, Distance, Kryptic Minds, Oris Jay, RSD and Jakes to name but a few, as well as radio support on BBC Radio 1, BBC Asian Network, BBC 6 Music and Kiss FM. This has helped Phaeleh to top the sales charts with releases on Surface Tension, Against the Grain & Urban Scrumping as well as recent releases on Skream’s Disfigured Dubz, N-Type’s Wheel & Deal Records and label of the moment Black Box.

Stealth Vs Rescued present...

TOMB CREW (Trouble & Bass)
This Saturday at Stealth Vs Rescued we are pleased to welcome back our friends TOMB CREW, who headline Room 1 as part of their regular 'MyCITY Is For Pimps' clubnight.
Tomb Crew comprised of Jamie, Nick and MC Illaman launch dancefloor destroying mixes of anything bass heavy – from house to kuduro and everything inbetween. Tomb Crew are part of the rapidly growing ‘new-bass’ scene but the truth is they have the mash-up principle down perfectly, the live show to end all live shows.

As well as the live shows, Tomb Crew have been creating remixes for Crookers, Drop the Lime, Oh Snap!, Totally Extinct Dinosaurs, Riz MC, Last Japan, Alex Winston & many more . With remixes already released on the Hot Chip affiliated label ‘Greco Roman’ and Fatboy Slim’s Southern Fried, Tomb Crew’s production output is continuing to increase. Tomb Crew productions have seen radio and club support from Kissy Sell Out, Toddla T, Tayo, Crookers, Sinden, Brodinski, Trouble & Bass Crew, DJ Yoda, Joe Hot Chip, Mistajam, Congorock, Doorly, Rob Da Bank, Eddie Temple-Morris and many more.

Get to know... JULIO BASHMORE (dirtybird)

Get to know...

JULIO BASHMORE
(dirtybird/Ten Thousand Yen/PMR Records)
It might seem counterintuitive for a producer to detach himself from one of the planet's most thriving music scenes, but in the case of Matthew Walker, AKA Julio Bashmore, that's exactly what he did growing up in bass music hotbed, Bristol. You see, Julio's first love is house music. And operating just on the peripheries of the city's scene has allowed him to quietly cultivate a take on the genre unlike any other.

Julio may have appeared to burst on to the scene in late 2009, but the lead up to the Julio Bashmore EP for Claude VonStroke's highly influential dirtybird label was essentially a lifetime in the making. This breakthrough also meant a difficult decision: on the cusp of leaving for university Julio decided instead to remain in Bristol and install production and DJing as his primary focus.

Aged 14, a battered old PC and a copy of Reason became Julio's very first 'instruments.' He later experimented with synthesizers and guitars, playing in bands for a brief period, but by the time he was old enough to experience club culture firsthand, Julio had made the realisation that DJing was the true vehicle in which to deliver his music.

After spending considerable periods of time sharpening his mixing and productions skills, Julio's big breakthrough came with his 2011 track 'Battle For Middle You' released in January on his 'Everyone Needs a Theme Tune' EP on new London-based record label PMR Records.

Prior to this release Julio had crafted critically acclaimed tracks & remixes for the likes of Night Slugs, fabric, Ten Thousand Yen & Soul Motive.

Here are a selection of his forward-thinking house productions:

With a recent collaboration with the first lady of dirtybird J Phlip, and forthcoming remixes for Turbo Records & Sound Pellegrino 2011 is set to be a massive year for the modest young man from Bristol!

Midnight (at the Aquarium) - J.Phlip & Julio Bashmore by JulioBashmore

For an idea of what to expect from his DJ sets check out the mixes below:

Jb's Armchair Dancefloor - Drowned In Sound

Julio Bashmore has been a very difficult man to book. We had been trying for over a year before managing it, as he had preferred to simply make music, than to traipse around DJ'ing. He is not anti-DJing, nor does he possess a sense of exclusivity; he simply prefers being locked away, producing. It is for this reason that we are so hyped for his upcoming set at Stealth.

Stay tuned for further info!

DOC DANEEKA (Ten Thousand Yen/RAMP) at Stealth (12/03/11)

Saturday 12th March, 2011

Stealth Vs Rescued present...

Doc Daneeka (aka. Mial Watkins) is at the forefront of the UKs 'post-garage' scene, producing highly percussive house music rich in tropical drums and syncopated rhythms. Daneeka first came on our radar with his track 'Drums in the Deep', which was one of the standout tracks on Fabric's Elevator Music compilation.

This release was soon followed by Doc's debut EP on the Ramp Recordings offshoot label 'PTN', which garnered support from the likes of Brackles, Martyn, Gilles Peterson, Marcus Nasty, Sinden, Kode 9 & Oneman.

Not content with this Doc Daneeka started his own boutique label, Ten Thousand Yen, releasing limited 12"s from artists like Julio Bashmore, C.R.S.T and XXXY alongside his own unique material.

Remixes for the likes of Delphic, Brackles & Shortstuff, CRST, Norrit, Jazzanova and Venom & Damage have helped solidify his reputation; as have his second EP for PTN and his debut release for RAMP, the much praised 'Hold On':

Also worthy of note is his massive remix of Breach's 'Fatherless', which has been supported by the likes of Ben UFO, Jackmaster, Sinden, Bok Bok, Benji B & lots more:

With a slew of bookings all around Europe, Doc Daneeka’s energetic DJ sets are becoming sought after by clubs around the world, and don't miss the chance to catch him at Stealth Vs Rescued!

REDLIGHT at Stealth (11/02/11)

Friday 11th February, 2011

BASSLACED present...

REDLIGHT (Digital Soundboy / MTA Records)
Originally best known for his drum’n’bass productions as DJ Clipz for labels like Full Cycle and Audio Zoo, Redlight is the alter-ego of Bristolian Hugh Pescod, which he’s used to explore an individual vision of bass music where grime, dubstep and squealing electro bleed into an overwhelmingly vibrant fusion, often soundtracked by ragga and grime vocalists.

Redlight's debut, The 'Lobster Boy' EP dropped in 2009, with the A-Side 'Feel So Good (Wine Up Your Body)' receiving some major support from Skream, Shy FX, Goldie, Rusko, Toddla T, Chase & Status and Jack Beats.

With Redlight's dubplates attracting the attention of the DJ A-list, it wasn't long before his next track 'Stupid' was snapped up - seeing a release in March 2010 on Shy FX's 'Digital Soundboy' Records. The original dub version was joined by a vocal version courtesy of Gorillaz & Kano collaborator Roses Gabor.

One of the biggest tracks in Redlight's unreleased arsenal was his massive 'MDMA Riddim', which following months of hype saw a release in August '09 on Chase & Status' 'MTA Records'. Once again the original instrumental version was included alongside a vocal - this time courtesy of Ms Dynamite - with the track being turned into the massive hit 'What U Talking About?!'.

Here is a link to another forthcoming Redlight banger - some calling it 'Source 16' and some 'Next Hype'. Keep an ear out for this one!

Not content with his own tracks Redlight has also been in the studio producing for other artists - including Ms Bratt ('Selecta'), Roses Gabor ('Lovesick') and Ben Westbeech ('Do It All Again').

And if that wasn't enough he has also found the time to collaborate alongside Rusko and also Toddla T (as 'Roller Express'). Busy busy busy!

If you are liking the sound of Redlight then head over to FACT Magazine to cop a free mp3 version of his remix of Breakage & The Newham General's track 'Hard', and have a listen to his Fact mix and his 5 minute mini-mix for Annie Mac's Radio 1 show:

SEIJI (Bugz In The Attic) @ Stealth Vs Rescued (05/02/11)

Stealth Vs Rescued
Every Saturday at Stealth & The Rescue Rooms
Voted 'Nottingham's Best Club Night' 2009 & 2010

with

SEIJI (Bugz In The Attic)
Seiji is the broken-beat veteran who has been making some of the toughest house music around, with his 2010 tracks 'Elevator' & 'Weedkiller' getting picked up by the likes of Diplo, Crookers, Mary Anne Hobbs & Annie Mac.

Seiji, known to his mother as Paul Dolby, is well-known for his booty-la-la-licious contributions to West London's Bugz In The Attic posse.

However, before broken beat or bruk appeared in the search engines of head-nodders worldwide, Seiji was already beat making, experimenting with U.S. style garage and proper old school drum 'n' bass.
From the age of 17 he decided to expand his repertoire of instruments, moving from cello to the world of synthesized segues and clunky midi-clocks. His first releases were on Reinforced Records, the label run by dance legends 4Hero, including this 1996 release 'Northern Exposure':

Instead of being catalogued with a fleeting genre-definition or area code, Seiji would rather be known for "simply heavy music", and after leaving Bugz in 2007, Seiji released an experimental beats album on Sonar Kollektiv, at the same time as producing & co-writing much of Roisin Murphy’s ‘Overpowered’ LP.

Riton & Seiji - Computer Juice from Joe Lea on Vimeo.

Seiji’s influence is now more keenly felt than ever, with myriad UK funky and contemporary garage producers referencing his work
, consciously and, at times, unconsciously. 2562, Shortstuff, Martyn, Untold, Bok Bok, Altered Natives, Roska, Geeneus – these are just a few of the producers who owe a significant debt to Seiji.

SEIJI 3 More of You Clip - SEIJI 3 released 21st February by Seiji

He has now returned to underground dance music, presenting his own fresh and eccentric take on bass heavy music with remixes including Toddla T, Basement Jaxx, Crookers, Florence & The Machine, Faithless, Erykah Badu and Gorillaz, and releases on Numbers, Fools Gold, Ninja Tune, Mad Decent, to name a few.

Seiji has been kind enough to offer lots of free MP3 goodies on his awesome website www.seiji.co.uk.

Also check out his mix for FACT Magazine, featuring his own tracks & remixes alongside the likes of Tim Green, Skream, SBTRKT, Todd Edwards, Greenmoney & lots more:

TOMB CREW (TROUBLE & BASS)

“We’re not a band” proclaims the Myspace page, “we’re a lot”. No arguments there; they’ve been packing out stages from London to New York in matching t-shirts bearing the Tomb Crew legend for the last two years. They launch dancefloor destroying mixes of anything bass heavy – from house to kuduro and everything inbetween. As the legions of grinning converts – everyone from grime heads to indie kids – will attest, Tomb Crew are very much the inebriated and debauched sound of fun. You know what that is, right?

After remixes for the likes of French Fries, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Crookers, Marco Del Horno & Drop the Lime; and support from DJs such as Toddla T, Sinden, Brodinski, DJ Yoda, Hot Chip, Mistajam, Congorock, Doorly, Kissy Sell Out & Crookers, Tomb Crew are set to release their debut EP on New York's TROUBLE & BASS label as part of their 'Heavy Bass Champions Of The World' series.

CONGOROCK (Fool's Gold)
In the years since his 2008 Stealth debut show Congorock (aka Rocco Rampino) has lit up the world of dance music, following in the footsteps of his Italian counterparts Crookers & Bloody Beetroots.

Congorock's first EP, 'Runark', was released on A Trak's Fools Gold Records at the start of 2009, and showcased his uncanny knack for making music that is both pulverizing and funky, throwing in clever twists and production flourishes where others would be content to merely crank up the volume.

Congorock continued to surprise with his second Fool's Gold single 'Babylon', which featured atomic synthesizer blasts, jacking tribal drums and included a vocal version featuring dancehall hero Mr Lexx (the voice behind Major Lazer's "Hold The Line").

Scion A/V Presents: Congorock - Babylon from Scion A/V on Vimeo.

The track became a gigantic international hit gaining support from everyone from Diplo & Sinden to Tiesto & David Guetta, and was remixed by Steve Angelo, who loved the original so much that he insisted on getting Congorock on board to remix his Swedish House Mafia track 'One'. This remix became one of the biggest of 2010, soundtracking clubnights and festivals the world over.

The remix requests have since been coming thick-and-fast, with Congorock putting his magic touch to releases for Rex The Dog, JKF (from MSTRKRFT) and most recently Mark Ronson's 'Somebody To Love Me'.

And have a look at this little video of Tiesto (!?!) playing Congorock's remix of 'One':
