SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER (R&S Records) at Stealth (22/04/11)
Friday 22nd April, 2011

SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER (R&S Records/Clone/Kinnego)
Space Dimension Controller is still relatively new to the scene, but in the last year or so has been responsible for some of the most jaw-dropping pieces of music we've ever had the pleasure of hearing.
With a dedicated affinity towards dusty old pieces of rare and often forgotten hardware, this man has created an intoxicating blend of detroit techno, p-funk, acid house and disco which can best be described as Galactic Funk. Unsurprisingly, the whole World has actually sat up and taken notice with everyone from Francois K to Josh Wink rinsing a number of blinding releases on labels such as R&S and Rush Hour and everybody else with the right mind flocking to catch this star-in-the-making before he jumps back in his space pod and leaves Earthly confines for new galactic pastures.
I think you can tell we're BIG fans and delighted to have him for his Nottingham debut.
Listen to his live mix recorded last summer in Belfast:
Space Dimension Controller @ UNiT EM
Also well worthy of a listen is his FACT Mix (from February 2010):

Also on the bill:
MIDLAND (Aus Music/Phonica)
DEATH ON THE BALCONY (Airdrop/Magicbag)
&
ZLEEP DJS
(Chamboché/Nick Cobby/Micawber)

Friday 22nd April, 2011

MIDLAND (Aus Music/Phonica)
In a little under a year this young Leeds-based producer has rapidly risen from aspiring bedroom producer to become a leading light in UK electronic music, and along with fellow visionaries Ramadanman (his housemate), Joy Orbison and a few others has literally gotten up and shaken the UK techno and bass scenes by the scruff of the neck.
The outcome has been a cross-pollination of sounds and ideas that has resulted in the current UK house/techno scene being perhaps as exciting as its been certainly in our memories and the undeniable envy of the rest of the World. Yes it's something we should be proud of!
Whether through his now legendary FACT mix or through his excellent joint release with Ramadanman on Aus and more recently his 'Bring Joy' EP on More Music, it's clear there is some serious talent revealing itself which leaves you pondering the limits to this guy's potential, because it's patently clear that he's going to be a huge influence for producers and DJ's alike over the coming years.

"boys want to be him, girls want to be with him"But cynics beware, amidst all the hype it is clear to see that DC-10 resident Seth is undeniably one of the most gifted dj/producers to have risen to prominence in the last few years. Having just been voted 3rd best DJ of 2010 on what is widely regarded as the foremost online house & techno forum Resident Advisor, being pipped to the post by some guy called Richie and a certain Ricky V...

LONE (Magic Wire/Werk Discs) at Stealth (18/02/11)
> > > LONE (werk discs/magic wire recordings) < < <
Lone originally turned heads with his wonky but nonetheless charming take on dreamy instramental hiphop most notably in his critically accalimed 'Lemurian' LP. More recently he's picked up the tempo and carved a a niche all of his own with knowing nods to early 90's house and Detroit techno.
All this is summed up perfectly on his fantastic mini LP 'Emerald fantasy Tracks' released on his very own Magic Wire Recordings.
It's no exaggeration to say that Matt is not only the most gifted producer to come out of Nottingham perhaps ever, but he's arguably the single most exciting producer in the UK at the moment.

Over the last 18 months or so anonymous man of mystery SBTRKT has gained adulation and notoriety in equal measures through his expertly crafted bass-heavy UK house creations and through playing his sets behind a tribal mask! This guise has allowed the music to talk for itself which has let him build firm foundations at the core of the UK bass scene and rapidly become one of the UK's most sought after producers.

MAGDA (M_Nus) & MARC HOULE @ Stealth

Sunday October 17th
M-NUS & ZLEEP PRESENT...
MAGDA ((M_Nus))
Magda is quite simply one of a handful of true luminaries in the world of underground House & Techno. Along with Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos, Marc Houle and Luciano there are few that have garnered such wide-sweeping respect & general popularity in equal measures. What makes her rapid rise all the more impressive is that unlike her contemporary trailblazers she has achieved this primarily as a DJ through international tours and mixes such as She's a Dancing Machine, Fabric 49.
Check out the reaction 1 minute 24 seconds in:
With her debut album ' From The Fallen Page' due to drop only days after this show, it's a safe bet that it will be well worth the wait.
MARC HOULE (live)(M_nus)

Since 2004, Houle has been a staple of Richie Hawtin's Minus imprint, through which he's released all of his records. The majority of his productions follow his label's stark aesthetic, though his biggest track to date remains "Techno Vocals," the 2007 single that poked fun at minimal's obsession with the pitched-down male voice.
Though not as tongue-in-cheek in tone, Drift also stems from Houle's distate for current musical trends, or what a press release describes as his "personal frustrations with what is considered 'techno.'" The album was composed during this year's long and dreary Berlin winter, as reflected in titles like "Inside," "Seeing in the Dark" and, more hopefully, "Melting." It will be his first album since 2006's Bay of Figs.

MATT TOLFREY (LEFTROOM/COCOON) INTERVIEW
After three massive nights (with Andrew Weatherall, Hector, Ivan Smagghe, Tim Green & Jamie Jones), this Friday sees the fourth installment of Zleep - where MATT TOLFREY will be playing alongside SIMON BAKER at ZLEEP 004.

As a self-proclaimed workaholic, Matt Tolfrey has spent the last few years forging a unique sound through his DJ sets and production and has somehow still found time to create and nurture one of the UK’s most respected, not to mention cutting edge house/techno labels in Leftroom. Matt has been ever present at Stealth since its inception several years ago. We put some questions to him.
What have you been working on recently Matt?

Technology has always played a key role in the evolution of house and techno. Do you think that this influence has become less important in recent years as producers have tended to look back for inspiration?
You’ve played all over the world, where do the clubbers most connect with what you are trying to communicate in your DJ sets? Why do you think that is?
Your top 5 records of the moment?

Matt has been ever present at Stealth since its inception several years ago. We put some questions to him.
What have you been working on recently Matt?
Recently it has been my tan and getting fat in USA. Music wise there is tons on, and never enough time to do it…Can you tell us what we can look forward to from your Leftroom label in the coming months?
I just finished a new remix solo for a new British label called Kaluki from Manchester by a guy called Joseph Kindred. Really happy with it, and seeing as it is only the second remix I have ever done on my own it has inspired me to produce more again.
Chris and I have remixes pending on Rekids of James Teej and Cityfox of Lee Curtiss. We’re also working really hard on our debut album, which we’re hoping to have finished by the end of the year.
We are promoing Left019 at the moment, which is by Eric Johnston a newish comer from Detroit. It comes with a remix from Ryan Elliot also. After that we have a big 20th release with tracks coming from all the Leftroom crew. 6Six tracks in total, four on vinyl and two digital exclusives. Then on Leftroom Limited we have an ep by iO and Westboy called With Love from Ukraine, then next up after that is an ep by London’s Jozif. Then the Left’d002 (Leftroom’s new digital label) is about to drop and we have various artist ep’s from then on every 4-6 weeks. We’re really busy with the label at the moment, we just changed distributors and took on Leon Oakey as our new label manager. After such a long time not putting out many releases, we have got everything in line again and are ready to take over!!!

Technology has always played a key role in the evolution of house and techno. Do you think that this influence has become less important in recent years as producers have tended to look back for inspiration?
The idea of only playing promo’s is totally gone now. I play as much old music as new, so this has definitely changed. Technology wise it’s only human to always evolve and get better, faster, more efficient, etc… Producers have always looked to the past for inspiration, it’s all based on disco in the end isn’t it…Who would be your singularly most important influence on your production work?
To be honest we try and not be influenced too much when it comes to production as we’re trying so hard to forge our own sound. But a producer I have a lot of respect for and who is getting insanely good at the moment is Lee Curtiss. He just finished a track that got signed to Culprit in LA that has me doing vocals on it, and if he can make me sound like I can actually sing, he can do anything…
You’ve played all over the world, where do the clubbers most connect with what you are trying to communicate in your DJ sets? Why do you think that is?
I am lucky as I feel I make a connection with all the people I play for. It is in my personality anyway, I get on with most people if not all, so I think comes through in my dj style. I’m not one of these dj’s that thinks I am educating people or anything like that. I just play what I would want to hear if I was on the dancefloor myself, which I still do a lot as well, everyone loves a good party and supporting people!Your role model?
Mum. She is the toughest cookie on the planet and inspires me a lot. She has just beaten cancer and my world revolves around her. I’m a big mummies boy at heart.
Your top 5 records of the moment?
This is always hard to do as there is a lot more than 5 records that I am buzzing off at the moment, but here we go, in no particular order…
1. Robin Ordell – The Show – Leftroom Limited
2. Lee Curtiss ft Matt Tolfrey – Candy – Culprit
3. Pezzner – Balboa Park – Freerange
4. Adonis – We’re Rocking Down The House (Basement Jaxx Remix)
5. Losoul ft Malte – Lies – Playhouse

Jamie Jones @ Zleep (Friday 21st May)

After bringing the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Hector, Tim Green & Ivan Smagghe to Stealth, Zleep are welcoming back the man who picked up awards for BEST PRODUCER' & 'BEST SINGLE' at the 2009 DJ Mag awards - the Welsh wonder JAMIE JONES.
Jamie Jones has achieved in the space of a few short years what many producers try for in a lifetime. Turning his hand to a variety of styles while still maintaining a strong signature sound, Jones has created an admired musical identity and a loyal global following.
One of techno’s rising stars, Jamie Jones is part of a new guard of house and techno djs who resonate as artists, party people, djs, and live acts. Raised in Wales, Jamie’s university days in London helped launch his infatuation with club culture that would bring him to Ibiza during the summers. Ultimately relationships forged during those island summers helped Jamie become an integral cog in thriving music scenes of Ibiza and later East London, where Jones’s bustling djscandance warehouse parties and regular gigs at Fabric helped make his mark in London during the winters.
During the summers, gigs and residencies like the Space Terrace, Manumission’s Music Box Room, and later DC10 (a club he frequented as one of the original regulars in his early days on the island) helped him gain a foothold in the Ibiza Scene while defining a sound that was uniquely electronic, soulful, and bouncy, with a consistent groove. During one of these summers in Ibiza, he played his long in the works creation Amazon to Freak n’ Chic boss Dan Ghenacia who signed it on the spot.
Amazon, when released, was well received and immediately drew Jones favorable comparisons to luminaries like Mathew Jonson and Carl Craig and went on to become the labels biggest selling record. Jamie followed that standout release with recordings on leading labels like Crosstown Rebels, Get Physical, Cocoon, Poker Flat and far too many more to mention.

IVAN SMAGGHE Interview - Stealth 6th Brithday

To headline the >ZLEEP< room at the Stealth 6th Birthday this Friday, we are looking forward to welcoming back a man who stands at the crossroads between glamorous Parisian hype and musical integrity, Stealth favourite IVAN SMAGGHE.
Ivan's 'Test' radio show and compilations imposed a new vision of leftfield electronica on Radio Nova and his programming for the two past years has been a faultless example of quality eclecticness. Though Smagghe hails from the early days of the Parisian underground - both through his connection with the defunct Rough Trade record shop and remixing contributions on various formats - he came back to music production in 2001 by launching his own Set imprint.
How long ago did you start djing & producing?
First paid set in 1992. Production came later, ‘96 probably. What was the first record you ever bought?
Soft Cell's ‘Tainted Love’ was the first I bought with my own money. And what was the last record (or track) you bought?
An EP by Dionigi called 'They Have Black Eyes’ on Quantity Division: Italian. Amongst others.Who were your main inspirations that got you into djing & production?
My dad and his love for Tangerine Dream. Throbbing Gristle, Severed Heads, and Soft Cell probably. Belgian new beat. I'm coming from a 'rock' background, so Weatherall has to be the man responsible for getting me properly into dance music. Dimitri from Amsterdam was a DJ I loved and loads of others. Harvey counted a lot at some point. Many others over the years really. How many records are in your collection?
I stopped counting and collecting when I lost 20,000 records in a fire back in 1998.

What are your 3 most played tracks at the moment?
Some unreleased tracks by French hopes DARABI (check Get The Curse for more info), 'Broken Clock' by CHALLENGE on Marketing, and an EDDIE C remix of SEAN BROSNAN on Needwant. What do you do when you are not djing / producing?
Read. Watch movies. Not TV, movies. Being angered by too many believing in the final victory of capitalism. What is your biggest fear?
Loss of a loved one. Including my cat.Stealth is 6 years old this Friday. What did you do on your 6th
birthday?
Too far away to remember I’m afraid. But I asked my mum for my first record in 1977. 'Manureva' by Alain Chamfort, a French pop track of which I’ve always wanted to sample first four bars.If you could pick 3 Dj's (past or present) to play at your party
who would you pick?
Dimitri from Amsterdam circa 1992, Poltergeist, an early Belgian legend whom I was never able to hear, and Nathan Wilkins really playing what he wants. They’re 3 amongst many though. What is your favourite memory of Stealth?
The quality of it's residents, Matt Tolfrey and Dave Congreve. And it was always a pleasure to see James Bailie.
Ivan will be playing alongside Tim Green, Dave Congreve & Zleep DJs at the Stealth 6th Birthday event this Friday.
Tickets are available from Alt-Tickets, Stealth Online or in person from Rock City Box Office.
