JAM CITY (Night Slugs) at Stealth (16/04/11)

Saturday 16th April, 2011

Stealth Vs Rescued present...

To date, there’s been an aura of mystique and anticipation surrounding the music of Jam City. Purported to be ridiculously prolific with his output, Jam City dubplates have been a staple of the charts, mixes, DJ sets & weekly Rinse FM shows of Bok Bok & L-Vis 1990 all the way back to before Night Slugs was a label entity. The young producer has even composed a film soundtrack and was featured in the 'New Band Of The Day' Guardian column over a year and a half ago!

“I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited about a new British producer as I am, right now, about Jam City” - FACT Magazine

In the past 12 months there has barely been a single music commentator who hasn't extolled the brilliance of Jack Latham aka Jam City. He has played a crucial role in the ascent of Night Slugs to its rightful place as one of the best dance labels going at the moment. His FACT mix in late 2009 quickly marked him out as one to watch and he has gone on to justify the (considerable) hype with two fantastic releases on Night Slugs.

"'Ecstacy Refix' is just one of those anthemic wonders that defies easy categorisation, employing distinctive Grime signatures but with an almost euphoric color palette that takes in rave stabs and distant percussive hits, proper hands-in-the-air styles for peaktime summer jams" - Boomkat

Anyone with a semblance of attending night clubs will have heard “Magic Drops” murdering the dark spaces of dancefloors in recent months and will instantly recognise the pressurised crunk grind meets blissed out keys and sludge drunk synths of Jam City’s tribute to Eski beat:

To find out more about Jam City check out this 2009 interview from Fact Magazine.

Get to know... JACQUES GREENE (Night Slugs/Lucky Me)

Get to know...

JACQUES GREENE (Night Slugs/Lucky Me)
The 21 year old Montreal-based dj/producer Jacques Greene has been making waves over the past few months, popping up late last year with releases on Night Slugs and Glasgow's Lucky Me label. His uplifting fusion of classic house and contemporary R&B has been setting dancefloors ablaze, so much so that after only two releases he has come over to the UK for a month long tour, including shows at BLOC weekend, Berghain (Berlin), Paris Social Club, Glasgow Sub Club and Plastic People London, before ending his tour with a Nottingham show at Stealth Vs Rescued (on Saturday 2nd April).

His first release was the track 'Baby I Don't Know (What You Want), which was featured on the Night Slugs Allstars Vol 1 Compilation:

This was soon followed by the release on 'The Look' EP on Lucky Me:

Little is known about the young producer (even his name is an alias), but one thing that is known is his love for analogue equipment. Have a look at the following videos, recorded in his studio prior to his Red Bull Music Academy appearance:

RBMA – DESTINATION TOKYO! TOUR TEASER: JACQUES GREENE

Jacques Greeeeeene: Destination Tokyo

His productions are going from strength to strength, and his third 12" has just dropped - the awesome 'Another Girl', which will be followed by his remix of the forthcoming Katy B single 'Broken Record'.

GIRL UNIT (Night Slugs)
Philip Gamble, the 24-year-old Londoner behind the GU mask, began DJing circa 2006-7 as 'Girl U No It's True', and after a few years decided to move into the world of music production. After playing alongside L-Vis 1990 and Bok Bok at one of their Night Slugs parties in London, Girl Unit passed on some of his tracks, showcasing his UK take on RnB/rap and regional US club music styles. This resulted in Girl Unit's first release, the 'IRL EP', which came out in early 2010 on the Night Slugs label:

IRL by GIRLUNIT

The release of his second Night Slugs EP was pushed forward due to the hype surrounding it - with DJs jacking clips and making their own playable edits of the tracks from online mixes. The title track ‘Wut’ was proclaimed single of the year by some of the most influential figures in bass music before it was even released.

‘Wut’ is the kind of uber-anthem bound to induce the kind of awestruck stupefaction as exemplified in its vocal refrain. Put simply, ‘Wut’ is massive, euphoric, a tune, big, banging, thrashing, whatever adjective you might want to throw at it; it satisfies every and all criteria." - Fact Magazine

WUT by GIRLUNIT

The track has featured in the majority of the 'Top tracks of 2010' lists, sound tracking parties all over the globe. Here are a few clips showing the reaction the track has been causing in the clubs:

Girl Unit has also created remixes for CRST, Wigflex's Taylor and Katy B and Ms Dynamite:

During Girl Unit’s DJ sets he tries to cohesively work his way through global house sounds, dirty south instrumentals, detroit/chicago classics, raw US club tracks and local bangers from rising UK producers, as well as his own productions and Night Slugs label mates releases. Here are two of his mixes to give you an idea of what to expect from his set at Stealth Vs Rescued:

BOK BOK (Night Slugs/Rinse FM) at Stealth (11/02/11)

Friday 11th February, 2011

BASSLACED present...

BOK BOK (Night Slugs/Rinse FM)
Bok Bok stands amongst London's underground music elite, with a unique sound and ever evolving, quintessentially UK but also alien - a grimy futuristic house/space crunk.

As a DJ, Bok Bok has been stacking riddims like Lego bricks since 2004, with his roots deep in the UK Grime sound. Unorthodox in every way, that music set off Bok Bok down a unique path. Since then he has spread his sights wider, taking in elements of gutter styles from around the globe, all of which share a certain off-the-wall bass-heavy vibe. Disregarding purism he instead hunts all over for fresh dubplates.

In 2007 Bok Bok entered the world of production, at first building tools for his own DJ sets then moving onto original material. Beatmaking quickly became a major focus as his tracks found a place amongst London's new wave of pioneers. As a remixer he would apply the reckless attitude of early Grime, flipping tracks into a whole new context. Bok Bok remixes of Dre Skull, Jinder, Kingdom, Crazy Cousinz and many others are tried and tested underground bangers in clubs internationally. At the tail-end of last year one of his solo productions was released as part of Modeselektor's 'Modeselektion Vol.01' compilation (alongside SBTRKT, Ikonika, Digital Mystikz & Ramadanman):

Bok Bok "Say Stupid Things" by Modeselektor

In 2008 Bok Bok teamed up with like-minded producer L-Vis 1990 to launch Night Slugs, a club night dedicated to their new hybrid sound. Over its three year existence the party has become a cornerstone of the city's music scene, hosting both homegrown stars and international guests, nurturing fresh talent and showcasing the best forward thinking club music cross-genre. In late 2009, Night Slugs expanded into a label, drawing together a crew of protagonists from various backgrounds: Kingdom from NYC, Jacques Greene from Montreal, Egyptrixx from Toronto and Girl Unit, Lil Silva, Mosca, Greena and Jam City from the UK.

In 2010 Night Slugs join London's legendary Rinse FM, with Bok Bok & L-Vis 1990 broadcasting fortnightly on Tuesdays 1-3pm GMT.

Bok Bok certainly has an ear for a big tune - often showcasing the hottest tracks months in advance of their release via his mixes for the likes of Mad Decent, Fact Magazine, XLR8R & 1Xtra. Notably his XLR8R podcast mix was voted 'The Best Podcast Mix of 2010", featuring tracks & remixes from the likes of Cosmin TRG, FaltyDL, Ramadanman, Untold, Ikonika, Martelo, D1, Girl Unit, Terror Danjah, Jam City, Azari & III, Cubic Zirconia & Dam-Funk:

L-VIS 1990 (Mad Decent/Night Slugs) at Stealth (09/10/11)

SATURDAY 9th OCTOBER, 2010

STEALTH Vs RESCUED present...

L-VIS 1990 (Mad Decent / Night Slugs / Sound Pellegrino)
Deeply rooted in the fabric of London’s vibrant scene, L-VIS 1990 (aka) James Connolly couples a defined British style with elements of global low end vibrations. By fusing elements of Garage, House, Dubstep and all around Bass Heavy riddims, L-VIS’s sound is filtered and reduced into what can best be described as a minimalist take on rhythmic club beats floating on elephantine subs.

Forever you (Produced by L-vis 1990)

Alongside Bok Bok he founded the Night Slugs record label at the start of 2010, releasing tracks from the likes of Mosca, Egyptrixx, Lil Silva, Girl Unit, Kingdom & Velour (aka. Hyetal & Julio Bashmore).
As his original perspective on dance music has attracted the attention of DJ’s world wide, L-VIS dubs have become a staple in the live sets of Diplo, Drop the Lime, Sinden, Brodinski, Crazy Cousinz, DJ Mehdi, Teki Latex and Orgasmic.

LIL SILVA (NIGHT SUGS)
http://www.myspace.com/djlilsilva
19-year-old Lil Silva is fast becoming one of the most talked about artists on the UK Funky scene. Not only does he possess the musical understanding to work with genres such as American House, Funky and Grime but his ability also allows him to merge and blend styles. Silva’s flair manifests itself in his creative production techniques, showcasing a distinct sound which he looks to continually evolve. Always looking to shy away from convention, the young producer’s talents are becoming as renowned for their innovation as they are for the effect they are having on the scene. Prominent cultural magazine factmag.com has even gone as far as describing Lil Silva’s sound as 'grime in disguise.'
Having gained initial exposure via Marcus Nasty, pioneer of the UK funky house scene, Lil Silva's track Different featured on the Ministry of Sound's 2009 compilation, 'The Sound of UK Funky.'

In recent months his fresh sound has been put to use on a much needed remix of Sidney Samson’s No. 1 hit Riverside, which received significant airplay from the likes of Annie Mac and Mista Jam.

As well as working on a track with Ms Dynamite, 2010 will also see the release of Lil Silva’s debut E.P. which goes by the working title of 'Horrible'. "I want producers and artists within the scene to help set a standard, especially when it comes to production - I’d like to see people experimenting with different sounds, instruments and programs. This way the music would appeal to a wider audience."

And with tunes such as Funky Flex and Seasons pushing his individual sound, Lil Silva may be moving out of Bedford sooner than he thinks.

You'll most likely have heard perhaps his biggest tune yet 'Different':

Here is JOY ORBISON playing it @ Stealth last November!!

ROSKA (Rinse FM) @ GIRLS GO FREE (02/04/10)

On Friday April 2nd we are pleased to welcome back ROSKA for a GIRLS GO FREE event, where you can expect to hear the freshest House, UK Funky, Garage & Dubstep.

A former MC, Roska made a name for himself in the UK Funky explosion of 2008, and his ‘Climate Change’ and ‘Elevated Levels’ EPs are scene classics. Along with Geeneus, Cooly G and Lil Silva, he’s one of the few from the Funky scene to make an impact abroad – magazines like XLR8R and The Fader have been all over the South Londoner for a while now and with his debut album set to drop on Rinse soon he's no doubt going to be getting a whole lot more attention!!

Check out this awesome video teaser for his forthcoming track Squark:

Also on the night we have a Nottingham debut from MOSCA (Night Slugs/Fabric). Sub FM regular Mosca is best known for ‘Square One’, a UK House anthem that takes in tribal percussion, Karizma’s horns, the longing bass of Joy Orbison, cut-up R’n'B and patois samples – so basically everything good in music ever – and gets played out by Kode 9, Shortstuff and more. But that’s only half the story: check new productions like ‘Gold Bricks, I See You’ and you’ll realise that you’re dealing with one of UK music’s brightest young stars.

Support comes from Littlefoot & GIRLS GO FREE Resident, DJ Snigger.

Check out the Facebook Event for Guestlist info.
