CLAUDE VONSTROKE exclusive interview for dollop

In advance of tonight's show at Stealth the guys over at dollop managed to catch a few minutes with the one and only CLAUDE VONSTROKE!

dollop: What do you think of the new hybrid of House, Dubstep and Techno that is coming out of the UK at the moment (eg. Julio Bashmore)?

CVS: Awesome. I love it. Finally something fresh to listen to.

dollop: And how is this hybrid of sounds received in the States?
CVS: We usually hear it for the first time just about the same time the trend dies in the UK. At the same time, we have our own trends. Maybe no one follows them like they do in London and Berlin but that's what makes us special, isn't it.

dollop: How is the dirtybird sound developing and what involvement do you have with that?

CVS: I am the A&R and owner of dirtybird so i guess i am responsible for the sound. The development is based entirely on the music that i like. Basically more grease and grit please. Don't be so obvious unless you are a genius and then you are allowed to make very simple tracks that kill because you know what you are doing

dollop: Which of your productions are you most proud of?
CVS: DB005 was the best 2 tracker combo I've done. All the way from goofy to emotional in one EP.

dollop: When did you start djing?
CVS: I had a radio show in High School which feels like about 100 years ago. There was no mixing involved with that. I would play a record then talk, then play another record. My show was called the Power Move and it was all hip-hop. I would give away a free pizza every show to get people to listen. It's not so common to have a radio station in a high school so i guess that was quite lucky.

dollop: Who is your role model?

dollop: What are you most afraid of in Detroit?

CVS: I'm not (which is the point of the track to begin with).

dollop: Have you revisited Detroit recently? How does it's current party scene compare to the past?
CVS: I don't feel comfortable being an "official" reporter on the Detroit scene because i moved away a while ago to San Francisco, but as far as I can tell it's been picking up again. Last time i went there i played for 2000 people which was quite a big jump from the time before for about 350 only a year ago. I may have to qualify that by telling you that "Mini-Me" was the 'MC' of that larger event which could have accounted for at least 30 extra people.
Claude VonStroke plays at dollop tonight at Stealth alongside Jamie Woon (live), Benji B (Radio 1) and lots more.

JAMIE WOON at Stealth (03/03/11)

Friday 4th March, 2011

JAMIE WOON (live)
Jamie Woon, like James Blake, is one of those new male artists showing what can happen when you combine conventionally strong soulful vocals with dubstep's eerie spaciousness and resonant production techniques.
Woon experienced an epiphany when Burial remixed his little heard rendition of 'Wayfaring Stranger'. Injecting some bass, the reclusive producer completed changed the singer's view of music.

Assisting Jamie Woon is recent album sessions, the track 'Night Air' boasted some additional production from Burial. The result was a stunning song, with Woon's voice riding atop some rumbling sub-bass.

Named at number 4 in the of BBC Sound of 2011, Jamie Woon is preparing to release his debut album.

Jamie's track 'Night Air' appreared in the majority of the 'End Of 2010 Charts', and featured an official remixes by Ramadanman and Deadboy and a cheeky bootleg refix by Rinse FM's Marco Del Horno.

CLAUDE VONSTROKE (dirtybird) at Stealth (04/03/11)

Friday 4th March, 2011

Claude VonStroke does not scowl and look mean while he DJs. He does not pretend to know everything and he will be nice to you and your friends. He is grateful to be doing music for a living and he knows that the reason people go to parties is to have fun. If you want to act cool and not have any fun then he is not the right DJ for you.

The Whistler by Claude VonStroke

Claude’s real name is Barclay Crenshaw, a guy raised in the suburbs Detroit who wanted to be a filmmaker but always had a knack for music. After several different careers, VonStroke started the “dirtybird” label at the age of 32.

Since 2005, dirtybird has carved out a niche as a premiere American label and has released over 40 EPs from the likes of dollop favourites The Martin Brothers (Justin & Christian), Julio Bashmore, Riva Starr, Solo, Zombie Disco Squad, Tim Green, Worthy & Style Of Eye.

Vocal Chords by Claude VonStroke

In an effort to give something back to the community VonStroke unveiled a new label “mothership” in 2007. A large percentage of the label’s proceeds go to a music school for children in Claude’s hometown of Detroit, Michigan. This label features more euro-flavored techno and house featuring groups like Catz ‘n Dogz, Maetrik and Voodeux.

Tour wise, Claude has headlined almost every major club, festival and basement after-party in the world.

Two of the most talked about sets in dollop history have been provided by Claude VonStroke - firstly his epic 3 hour set back in 2008 and most recently in the dollop room at the 2010 Indoor Festival. Still riding high on the critical acclaim for his 'Bird Brain' LP, we are looking forward to welcoming him back to dollop at Stealth!

This Friday at Stealth we are looking forward to welcoming back Pete and Boggy (aka The Riotous Rockers) to warm-up for Mr Erol Alkan at dollop. The guys boast residencies at some of Europe’s top clubs, run the clubnight ‘ASBO’, and certainly know how to spot a great tune from a duff one. We managed to grab a few minutes with the guys to give us their Top 20 Tracks of 2010.

EROL ALKAN
Erol Alkan is our favourite DJ here at dollop HQ, and we are very pleased to be welcoming back to play at our party :)

In his early 20s he founded the most influential clubnight of its time, ‘Trash’ in London, where he played weekly alongside the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Klaxons, Bloc Party, Peaches & Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Over the last decade the world’s dancefloors have been rocked by Erol’s remixes (for Klaxons, Hot Chip, Scissor Sisters, Alter Ego, Mylo, Bloc Party, DFA1979, Chemical Brothers & Franz Ferdinand); with Erol being voted Mixmag’s ‘DJ Of The Year’ and ‘Best International Dj’ and even being called up to support both Madonna and Daft Punk!
Erol’s label ‘Phantasy Sound’ has put out tracks from Chilly Gonzales, Riton, Primary 1, Boris Dlugosch & Late Of The Pier; and to date Alkan has acted as album producer for Late Of The Pier, Mystery Jets & The Long Blondes.
More recently he has released his collaborations with Boys Noize ‘Waves/Deathwave’ & ‘Avalanche/Lemonade’ - both of which have been picked up by the world’s top DJs.
Add to this the warped balearic psychedelic brotherhood of ‘Beyond The Wizards Sleeve’ and his work as the mysterious 'Mustapha3000'.
Until you’ve borne witness to one of his legendary DJ sets, poured headily over one of his meticulously crafted productions, or been catapulted to a sudden sonic nirvana by the dropping of one of his remixes, you might be justified for dismissing his existence as an extremely elaborate myth of the musical underground. After all, how can one man, still in his early thirties, have kept so many kids dancing for so long?

dollop - Friday 3rd December, 2010

◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇

FACTORY FLOOR (live)
Factory Floor are the latest good band to come out of East London. They play using vintage analogue equipment and tape loops to create abrasive electronic music, layered in feedback, with insistent Krautrock bass lines and obligatory Ian Curtis post-punk vocals. They’re all the best bits of Sonic Youth and Throbbing Gristle, with Giorgio Moroder disco electronics and Kraftwerk beats, an inspired combination.

Stephen Morris of Joy Division/New Order called Factory Floor "Raw, Chaotic, Fantastic and Different" and we couldn’t agree more.

JIMMY EDGAR (Warp / K7! / Live)
Born in Detroit, Jimmy Edgar began experimenting with electronic music at age 10, and by the age of 15 was DJing alongside the likes of Detroit legends Juan Atkins and Derrick May.

In 2001 at the tender of 18, his hyper-sexed microchip stylings caught the ear of Warp, where he cranked out his brand of amped-up laptop funk for the next eight years, culminating in the full-length classic 'Color Strip'. Now 26, Edgar is shaking things up at German beat boutique !K7.
His recent album "XXX" was released in June 2010 to critical acclaim.

Jimmy is also pretty nifty with a camera. His photography has been shown in Vogue, Dazed, H, Notion, Clash and URB, and his work has been shown in London, NYC & Los Angeles. Jimmy has also shot for such bands as Hercules Love Affair, Her Bad Habit, Kelley Polar, Plus Device, Steve Mason/King Biscuit Time/Black Affair, Pretty Positive, Dead on TV, Kava Kon, Theophilus London, Machinedrum and more. DJ MEHDI (Ed Banger) Interview

In advance of tonight's show at dollop we have managed to grab a few words with Parisian DJ superstar - DJ MEHDI.

After working as a hip-hop producer with the likes of MC Solaar, Asian Dub Foundation and Futura 3000, DJ Mehdi joined forces with Pedro 'Busy P' Winter in 1997, hosting a very successful monthly hip-hop / electro club night at former Paris nightspot Pulp.

This friendship resulted in Busy P signing Mehdi up to his Ed Banger label, culmating in the release of the 'Lucky Boy' LP in 2006. The album featured the classic tracks 'Signatune' (which was re-edited by Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter) and 'I Am Somebody' (featuring Chromeo).

More recently, Dj Mehdi has been part of a group of friends and DJ's collectively known as Club 75 which includes Cassius, Busy P and Xavier de Ronsay (Justice).

Where are you now?
In my house, in my bed.
What is your favourite city?
Paris, then NYC, then London.

What was the first record you bought?
Public Enemy - 'It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back'

When/ where/ how did you start dj’ing & producing?
In my bedroom, when I was 11 years old. How, it's a quite long story but my father, my uncles, my cousins, and a few street hustlers from my neighbourhood all had their importance.

How many records are in your collection?
5000 vinyls and maybe 15000 mp3's.

What is your favourite album ever?
Public Enemy - 'It Take A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back'

Who is your role model?
Jerry Seinfeld.

What is your preferred production and dj set up?
It's just me and my guitar.

What do you never leave the house without?
My pants.

What do you get up to when you are not busy with music?
Jumping up and down on the bed with my son.

What tracks are you currently working on?
'Let The Children Techno' compilation with Busy P.

What has been your personal musical highlight of 2010 so far?
The first time I heard 'Over' by Drake, in February.

What upcoming acts do you think could breakthrough in 2011?
Gesafelstein.

DJ Mehdi performs at dollop tonight as Carte Blanche (alongside his partner in crime Riton).

Tickets are available here.

DJ MEHDI (Ed Banger) & RITON as CARTE BLANCHE this Friday

As we mentioned previously, this Friday at Stealth is dollop, and along with Kissy Sell Out's San City High room we are very pleased to bring you the hottest duo in House & Techno music - DJ MEHDI & RITON (aka. CARTE BLANCHE)!

"YOU GONNA LOVE THE HOUSE"
"This is what DJ MEHDI told RITON when he invited him for a tour of the Chicago ghetto music he's been stashing for 3 years, waiting for the good moment to reveal. And this is exactly what happened: British grand master DJ and producer Riton moved in, and wanted to never leave. He loved the House, they loved the House. They got married and lived very happily during the years 2009 and 10. Their brainchild was born, everybody welcomed CARTE BLANCHE. Of course, they weren't the only ones. Ed Banger honcho Busy P snatched the mp3's that were bouncing back and forth across the Chunnel for a soon release on the label. The result? Four tracks of neck-breaking breaks, a shout-out to the masters, but with no nostalgia whatsoever. And maybe a couple of (obvious) samples, ok."

"DJ MEHDI has been foraying into all things black music since 1995. He made his international print in 2006 with the release of the LUCKY BOY album on Ed Banger, and been club-hopping worldwide ever since, touring with Justice and A-Trak, remixing Santigold and Busta Rhymes, as well as dropping his own dancefloor bombs in the name of SIGNATUNE, POCKET PIANO or I AM SOMEBODY.

Riton is Newcastle's finest, having made it from the Northern vibrations of Grand Central Recordings to being the most stable asset in the RADIO SOULWAX family and tour. His own street cred goes widescope, from remixing LCD Soundsystem and Crookers to breaking the number one spot in the Kraut Rock charts in 2008 with his EINE KLEINE NACHT MUSIK project on Modular Records. He's also a model, but you knew that already.

DJ MEHDI and RITON as CARTE BLANCHE are four decks, one mixer, and a TR 909, of course. No bangers, strictly house music."

Their debut EP on Ed Banger Records dropped back in May, and featured the tracks 'Gar Du Nord', 'Black Billionaires', 'Do Do Do' (with Kid Sister), 'In The Mix' & 'Jigga Bite'.

Since it's release the duo have remixed Chromeo, Uffie & Scissor Sisters, and had their tracks "Gar Du Nord' and 'Do Do Do' have been remixed by Green Velvet and Laidback Luke respectively. Check out a little video of their 6.45am set at Sonar festival over the summer:
