HYETAL (live) at Dot To Dot Festival 2011 (29/05/11)

Bank Holiday Sunday 29th May

Dot To Dot Festival 2011

HYETAL (live)
Growing out of Bristol’s second wave of Dubstep starlets alongside producers such as Joker, Gemmy and Julio Bashmore, Hyetal makes music that blurs boundaries, builds dancefloors and ‘drips with colour’. Infact much has been made of the visual nature of Hyetals music, like a kaleidoscope for the ears drums or a synesthesiac’s wet dream.

“Hyetal has a kinda strange and tender magic that is just truly enchanting”

Mary Anne Hobbs (BBC Radio 1)

Since relocating from his native Southampton he has been fully embraced by his new home of Bristol, releasing on the local labels Punch Drunk and Soul Motive.

His collaborations with Julio Bashmore (as Velour for Night Slugs), Shortstuff, Peverelist & Baobinga and mixes for Mary Anne Hobbs (BBC Radio 1), Fabric Live, FACT & LuckyMe have help to showcase the sound of this next generation of ‘post’ Dubstep artists and firmly sits Hyetal right in the middle of them.

Hyetal's first single from his forthcoming debut long-player 'Phoenix' dropped last year, gaining rave reviews from the likes of Resident Advisor, Pitchfork, Fact Magazine & Knowledge:

On May 2, the talented producer will add a full-length LP to his repertoire. The 10-track Broadcast will drop via Bristol-based imprint 'Black Acre', preceded by the recently released single, 'Diamond Islands'. On the inspiration behind that fresh track, Hyetal says, "I wanted to make something stripped back, so most of it’s just [vocalist Alison Garner], sub-bass, a drum machine, and this weird atmosphere."

Get to know...
DARK SKY
After playing at Stealth a few times under their 'Boogaloo Crew' guise we are pleased to welcome back Matt & Tom, who alongside Carlo make up the production trio DARK SKY.
With numerous remixes under their belts and a handful of original releases to their name, Dark Sky are picking up some serious momentum, with their infectious brand of soulful garage and funky infused dub house, catching the ear of many a tastemaker.

The xx - Crystalised (Dark Sky Remix)

With a packed gigging schedule and plenty of releases in the pipeline, the future looks bright for Dark Sky. 2010 saw the release of their first two EPs 'Something To Lose' on BlackAcre & 'Frames' on Pictures Music; the inclusion of their track 'Leave' on the prestigious Ninja Tune' 20th Anniversary compilation, and massive remixes for The xx, Stateless & Kelis.

This year the Dark Sky guys have also been having a busy time of it - remixing Ben Westbeech's 'Falling'; producing a cheeky Nelly Furtado bootleg (in the form of 'Promiscuous Gyal'); creating a highly rated mix for Fact Magazine, and also making an appearance on our favourite U-Stream show The Boiler Room.

Get to know... JULIO BASHMORE (dirtybird)

Get to know...

JULIO BASHMORE
(dirtybird/Ten Thousand Yen/PMR Records)
It might seem counterintuitive for a producer to detach himself from one of the planet's most thriving music scenes, but in the case of Matthew Walker, AKA Julio Bashmore, that's exactly what he did growing up in bass music hotbed, Bristol. You see, Julio's first love is house music. And operating just on the peripheries of the city's scene has allowed him to quietly cultivate a take on the genre unlike any other.

Julio may have appeared to burst on to the scene in late 2009, but the lead up to the Julio Bashmore EP for Claude VonStroke's highly influential dirtybird label was essentially a lifetime in the making. This breakthrough also meant a difficult decision: on the cusp of leaving for university Julio decided instead to remain in Bristol and install production and DJing as his primary focus.

Aged 14, a battered old PC and a copy of Reason became Julio's very first 'instruments.' He later experimented with synthesizers and guitars, playing in bands for a brief period, but by the time he was old enough to experience club culture firsthand, Julio had made the realisation that DJing was the true vehicle in which to deliver his music.

After spending considerable periods of time sharpening his mixing and productions skills, Julio's big breakthrough came with his 2011 track 'Battle For Middle You' released in January on his 'Everyone Needs a Theme Tune' EP on new London-based record label PMR Records.

Prior to this release Julio had crafted critically acclaimed tracks & remixes for the likes of Night Slugs, fabric, Ten Thousand Yen & Soul Motive.

Here are a selection of his forward-thinking house productions:

With a recent collaboration with the first lady of dirtybird J Phlip, and forthcoming remixes for Turbo Records & Sound Pellegrino 2011 is set to be a massive year for the modest young man from Bristol!

Midnight (at the Aquarium) - J.Phlip & Julio Bashmore by JulioBashmore

For an idea of what to expect from his DJ sets check out the mixes below:

Jb's Armchair Dancefloor - Drowned In Sound

Julio Bashmore has been a very difficult man to book. We had been trying for over a year before managing it, as he had preferred to simply make music, than to traipse around DJ'ing. He is not anti-DJing, nor does he possess a sense of exclusivity; he simply prefers being locked away, producing. It is for this reason that we are so hyped for his upcoming set at Stealth.

Stay tuned for further info!

KODE 9 (Hyperdub) at Stealth (18/03/11)

Friday 18th March, 2011

WIGFLEX present...

Kode 9
Based in South London, Kode9s hyperdub sound is difficult to define, sometimes with beats, sometimes without, sometimes with a vocalist, sometimes without, the only continuity is the heavy sub bass. Currently, Kode9's DJ sets travel through a selection of dancehall influenced bass heavy skank, currently referred to as grime and dubstep. In 2006 he mixed the Dubstep Allstars Vol.3 CD compilation on Tempa records with vocalist Spaceape and released their debut album, 'Memories of the Future'.

Kode9 runs the record label Hyperdub (releasing artists such as the Burial, Joker, Zomby, Cooly G, Darkstar, The Bug, Warrior Queen and Ikonika).

For 4 years, Kode9 hosted the weekly Fwd>> show on Rinse FM, London's grime and dubstep pirate radio station, and is one of the rotating DJs at DMZ, the seminal dubstep night in London.

He has released tracks on Aphex Twin's Rephlex label, pioneering dubstep labels Tempa, Domino and his own Hyperdub imprint and has recently remixed artists such as Burial, Junior Boys, The Bug and local talent Geiom.

His DJ sets have helped spread the South London sound internationally, to East Asia, Europe, South America, North America and Australia, including headline shows at some of the world's top festivals including Sonar, Glastonbury, Outlook & Coachella.
