D DOUBLE E (Newham Generals) @ Girls Go Free

Friday 4th February

► ► Girls Go Free @ Stealth ► ►

D DOUBLE E (Newham Generals/Dirtee Stank/Rinse FM) ★

"Oh My Gosh... It's D Double!!!"

D Double E is one of the grime scene's most loved MCs, known for his distinctive flow and style.
Starting out as a member of the 187 Crew (alongside previous GGF Guest Jammer), D Double was soon invited by former school friends to join the infamous 'Nasty Crew' (alongside the likes of Kano & Marcus Nasty).
2004 saw collaborations with The Streets, Dizzee Rascal, Shola Ama, Kano, and not forgetting his feature on Lethal Bizzle’s Club Smash “Pow”, shooting straight in at number 11 in the UK charts.

In 2005, Double’s time with NASTY came to an end and along with fellow former member Footsie he formed the group Newham Generals, who were immediately signed to Dizzee Rascal’s label, Dirtee Stank Recordings. A world tour with Dizzee soon followed (including a show at Stealth in November '05), as well as the duo hosting a weekly slot on Rinse FM.

More recently D Double E has gained acclaim due to the Breakage produced collaboration 'Hard', and his 2010 solo smash 'Street Fighter Riddim'.

The last 12 months has seen D Double guest on the remix of P Money's anthem 'Slang Like This', and also jump on the massive 'Woo Riddim' ('Bad To The Bone') aswell as releasing the 'Bag Of Grease' EP featuring 'Like It Or Not'.

D Double E’s debut EP “Bluku! Bluku!” is scheduled for a 2011 release on Dirtee Stank Recordings.

GHOSTPOET (live) at The Rescue Rooms (14/04/11)

GHOSTPOET (live)
A U.K.-based MC whose beats and flow brimmed with drowsy anxiety, Ghostpoet (Obaro Ejimiwe) became involved with music while attending university. He was a member of a grime collective but eventually gravitated toward a less energetic production sound and MC’ing style, introduced on 2010’s 'The Sound of Strangers', a self-released four-track EP that caught the ear of BBC DJ Gilles Peterson.

Peterson licensed the EP for his Brownswood label and featured a demo version of the track “Liines” on the sixth Brownswood Bubblers compilation, issued that November. Back in February Brownswood released the first Ghostpoet full-length, 'Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam', featuring the single 'Cash & Carry Me Home':

The track has seen support on Radio 1 from the likes of Rob Da Bank, Gilles Peterson, Nick Grimshaw & Zane Lowe, and was followed up by the album's second single 'Survive It':

Back in March Ghostpoet and UK rapper Kano met for the first time at the Red Bull Studios in London, and Kano stepped into the booth and laid down a verse for the remix of Ghostpoet's single "Cash And Carry Me Home". Fingers crossed the remix sees the light of day!

Ghostpoet plays live at The Rescue Rooms supporting Metronomy on Thursday 14th April, 2011.

Advance tickets are available from here.

Get to know... WAFA (Grizzly)

WAFA (GRIZZLY)
Norwich born Nathan Curran (aka WAFA) is regarded as one of the most talented drummers of recent years - providing the beats for the likes of Lily Allen, Faze Action, Kano, Lady Sovereign, Pnau, Craig David, Reef, Tinchy Styder, James Morrisson, Paloma Faith and most notably UK dance/electronic house sensations Basement Jaxx.

Whilst studying at music college in London, Nathan became close friends with Tim Land (who went on to release on Hospital Records as 'Landslide'), who encouraged him to get himself a laptop and 'start making beats'. With the success of his drumming, he didn't have the time to fully focus on his own music production, but whilst on tour he would spend his spare minutes getting his production skills down, and sending the tracks to his friend Seiji for feedback.

His musical epiphany occurred at The Big Chill in 2009, when (after headlining the festival with Basement Jaxx) Nathan stumbled across a late-night DJ set from Stealth favourite Toddla T.
“I saw Toddla T and he blew me away. It reminded me of the Grant Nelson vibe with mash up rave, and everyone was going mental. I thought at the time - I wanna make some mad beat bleep shit like this, so I came back to my humble studio in Kensal Rise and made “Ewid Disco”

After Djing at clubnights in and around London, Nathan became a resident at Basement Jaxx's 'Inside Out' parties in Brixton, where he would play disco alongside the Jaxx's official tour DJ Graeme Sinden. When Sinden mentioned to him that he was setting up a new record label, Nathan sent him some demos (including 'Ewid Disco') and Wafa was born!

The tracks were signed on the spot, and WAFA's debut EP was released in 2010 on Sinden's 'Grizzly' label. The lead track 'Ewid Disco' was featured on Crookers' Mixmag CD, Brodinski's 'Mystery Mix' and Drop The Lime's Fabriclive53 Mix; and the EP also recieved props from the likes of Annie Mac, MJ Cole, Gilles Peterson, xxxy, Nick Grimshaw, Mary Anne Hobbs and SBTRKT.

To help promote the EP's release, WAFA & Grizzly were kind enough to give away two remixes of the tracks. Click here for the link to download Canblaster's remix of WAFA's track 'Pop Up', and here for the link to download the Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs' remix of 'Ewid Disco'.

Since the release of his debut EP WAFA has gone from strength to strength, remixing the likes of Basement Jaxx, The Count & Sinden, Steve Angello, Jon Giovanni (aka Felix from Basement Jaxx), Pnau, & Nottingham's own DJ Santero.

Jon Giovanni - Take Off (WAFA Remix) by WAFA

Steve Angello - Knas (WAFA Re-edit) by WAFA

The Count & Sinden - Addicted To You (WAFA Remix) by WAFA

WAFA has recently collaborated with some of the hottest names on the scene (Sinden and Trouble & Bass head-honcho Drop The Lime), and will soon be following in the footsteps of DJ Zinc by releasing on Dave Spoon's 'Televizion' label.

Make sure you catch him when he plays at Stealth Vs Rescued on March 19th. Also keep your eyes peeled on the blog for an exclusive interview and some more bits and pieces from the man they call WAFA.

REDLIGHT at Stealth (11/02/11)

Friday 11th February, 2011

BASSLACED present...

REDLIGHT (Digital Soundboy / MTA Records)
Originally best known for his drum’n’bass productions as DJ Clipz for labels like Full Cycle and Audio Zoo, Redlight is the alter-ego of Bristolian Hugh Pescod, which he’s used to explore an individual vision of bass music where grime, dubstep and squealing electro bleed into an overwhelmingly vibrant fusion, often soundtracked by ragga and grime vocalists.

Redlight's debut, The 'Lobster Boy' EP dropped in 2009, with the A-Side 'Feel So Good (Wine Up Your Body)' receiving some major support from Skream, Shy FX, Goldie, Rusko, Toddla T, Chase & Status and Jack Beats.

With Redlight's dubplates attracting the attention of the DJ A-list, it wasn't long before his next track 'Stupid' was snapped up - seeing a release in March 2010 on Shy FX's 'Digital Soundboy' Records. The original dub version was joined by a vocal version courtesy of Gorillaz & Kano collaborator Roses Gabor.

One of the biggest tracks in Redlight's unreleased arsenal was his massive 'MDMA Riddim', which following months of hype saw a release in August '09 on Chase & Status' 'MTA Records'. Once again the original instrumental version was included alongside a vocal - this time courtesy of Ms Dynamite - with the track being turned into the massive hit 'What U Talking About?!'.

Here is a link to another forthcoming Redlight banger - some calling it 'Source 16' and some 'Next Hype'. Keep an ear out for this one!

Not content with his own tracks Redlight has also been in the studio producing for other artists - including Ms Bratt ('Selecta'), Roses Gabor ('Lovesick') and Ben Westbeech ('Do It All Again').

And if that wasn't enough he has also found the time to collaborate alongside Rusko and also Toddla T (as 'Roller Express'). Busy busy busy!

If you are liking the sound of Redlight then head over to FACT Magazine to cop a free mp3 version of his remix of Breakage & The Newham General's track 'Hard', and have a listen to his Fact mix and his 5 minute mini-mix for Annie Mac's Radio 1 show:

CHASE & STATUS (DJ Set) @ Countdown NYE

The biggest New Years Eve party in the UK returns to Rock City, Stealth & Rescue Rooms to bring in 2011. Having sold out for the last 2 years, the line up for this year’s Countdown is second to none. With several of the biggest nights in Nottingham on board to provide 7 arenas of music, for 4,000 people, running from 8.30 till 6am and with Funktion One sound throughout this promises to be an epic New Years Eve celebration!

Chase & Status headline the Rock City main hall bringing in the New Year with an exclusive midnight set. 2010 has been massive for these guys and with a sell out UK tour and several top 10 singles under their belt they’re due to drop their 2nd album in January 2011.

Check out the video to their new single 'Blind Faith' (released on January 24th):

How many artists / producers can count Jay Z, Snoop Dogg and Pharell as fans as well as drum and bass’ finest Andy C, Hype and Pendulum; enjoy heavy rotation in the hands of dub-step royalty such as N-Type and Skream; and have each release enthusiastically supported by Annie Mac and Zane Lowe? This is what Saul Milton and Will Kennard, producing under the name Chase & Status, have achieved in 5 years, and the highlight of their young career so far has been their debut LP ‘More Than Alot’ which has helped turned them into a unique urban phenomenon, and the biggest crossover act to come out of the underground since Pendulum.

They met at Manchester University through their mutual love of drum and bass in the mid nineties and have DJ’d ever since, waiting until 2004 for their first production, a remix for Future Cut (better known these days for their production work with Lily Allen). It was followed by a series of drum and bass anthems for the biggest underground labels including ‘Duppy Man’ for Breakbeat Kaos (home of Pendulum’s platinum selling debut album) in 2005 and ‘The Druids’ EP for DJ Zinc’s trendsetting Bingo label a year later. Their production work for Jenna G’s ‘In Love’ the same year earned them their first award, ‘Best Single’, as voted by over 40,000 listeners for the BBC 1Xtra Drum & Bass Awards.

Despite a high volume of releases on Ram Records and constant DJ work, Chase & Status managed to mastermind and release their debut album last year. Packed with the kind of drum and bass anthems that helped build their reputation, it also features tracks which show the diversity of their work: such as ‘Pieces’ featuring Plan B and the Radio 1 A-List single ‘Against All Odds’ featuring Kano.

The result of the album is a thrilling journey through the UK urban scene and deserves its great title: ‘More Than Alot’. One track from the album ‘Eastern Jam’ was recently spotted by Snoop Dogg and newly released in April 2009 as ‘Snoop Dogg Millionaire’.

Chase & Status have recently been hailed as ‘The most exciting producers in the UK today’ by Pharell Williams of N*E*R*D fame, and the excitement around the pair doesn’t stop there. They have been asked to remix tracks by some of the world’s hottest artists including recent remixes of Jay Z’s ‘Death Of Auto-Tune’, The Prodigy’s ‘Invaders Must Die’ and White Lies ‘Death’.

In 2010, Chase & Status have signed a major record deal with Vertigo on Mercury Records, started working on new material for their second album, the first fruits of which entitled ‘End Credits’ feat. Plan B appeared on the film ‘Harry Brown’ featuring Sir Michael Caine.

The second track from the upcoming album was 'Hypest Hype' featuring Stealth favourite Tempa T. The video was filmed during their live shows earlier in the year, and numerous festivals over the summer months. For a free download of the track head over to www.chaseandstatus.co.uk .
