BURNS (2112 Records)
BURNS is the young British newcomer championed by Annie Mac, Erol Alkan, The Ed Banger Crew, A-Trak, The NME, Mixmag, The Guardian, The Times, Time Out, DJ mag, Calvin Harris, Zane Lowe, blogs, and forums alike.
2009 saw the release of BURNS' debut - 'The Turbo EP', which featured the track 'Heartbeats' alongside the original of 'Turbo' and a remix from Jokers Of The Scene. 'The Teknique EP' soon followed, with the tracks 'Teknique', 'Into My Eyes' & 'First Move' (complete with remixes from Fred Falke & His Majesty Andre) making their impact on dancefloor's worldwide.
On the strength of the two EPs BURNS was handpicked by both Deadmau5 & Calvin Harris to support them both on their worldwide tours.

2010 began with a range of ‘hot tip’ media plaudits, before Burns released his first mix compilation 'This Is Burns 001: European Sex Music', featuring tracks from the likes of Armand Van Helden, Boys Noize, Surkin, BeatauCue, Tony Senghore, Jan Driver, Brodinski & L-Vis 1990.

The lead track from his third release (‘So Many Nights EP') first appeared on DJ Mehdi's Christmas 2009 Mixtape for the Ed Banger website, Cool Cats. The buzz quickly spread to the blogs and forums with the Ed Banger crew unanimously declaring it to be a 'banger” (their highest accolade) & A-Trak charting it on his own blog.

BURNS' latest track 'Y.S.L.M (You Stopped Loving Me) is co-produced by French House legend Fred Falke and comes out on 12th December (following months of support from the likes of Annie Mac), and BURNS has just been nominated as 'Best Breakthrough DJ' in the DJ Mag Best of British Awards.

RUSKO at Stealth for Detonate (26/11/10)

Christopher Mercer, aka Rusko was born in Leeds in 1985 to a musical family. From day dot Rusko was surrounded by music whether it be his families piano’s, guitars, banjo’s and saxophones… or in his later years the heavy reggae and dub sound systems of Leeds, music has always been an integral part of Rusko’s life.

After graduating from Leeds university with a degree in musical performance and having spent the past 10 years making future dub alongside Leeds very own Iration Steppas, Rusko discovered Dubstep, connecting with the sound and made the move down to London to further advance his musical opportunities.

Veering away from the dark, serious side of the sound Rusko bought a highly driven energy and fun approach to the dubstep massive, quickly coining his own take on the genre that infected . His sound appealed to many people outside of the dubstep world as his productions became more adventurous in formula, sound and energy. His huge hit “Cockney Thug” has been played by everyone from Pete Tong, Switch, Diplo and Santogold; and has been remixed by Buraka Som sistema, Caspa, Diplo, Drop the Lime and the Scratch Perverts.

In 2007 Rusko (alongside partner in crime Caspa) released a CD as part of the FabricLive Mix Series (FabricLive 37), which was the first edition of the series to feature the Dubstep Genre. This helped further push the sound to the mainstream, and soon Rusko was getting asked to remix some of the biggest names in music -including The Prodigy, Claude VonStroke, Sub Focus, Basement Jaxx and even Lady Gaga!

Now part of the Mad Decent Camp, his 'O.M.G' album was released earlier in the year, and has already spawned the hit singles 'Hold On' and 'Woo Boost'.

Rusko co-produced M.I.A's latest album and is currently working on forthcoming material with the first lady of pop Britney Spears! Rusko is only going in one direction. Onwards, upwards and far beyond any other young producer could dream of.

Check out this mix Rusko recorded back in '09:

EROL ALKAN at dollop (03.12.10)

Friday 3rd December, 2010

◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆ ◇

dollop present....

EROL ALKAN
Erol Alkan is our favourite DJ here at dollop HQ, and we are very pleased to be welcoming back to play at our party :)
In his early 20s he founded the most influential clubnight of its time, ‘Trash’ in London, where he played weekly alongside the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Klaxons, Bloc Party, Peaches & Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Over the last decade the world’s dancefloors have been rocked by Erol’s remixes (for Klaxons, Hot Chip, Scissor Sisters, Alter Ego, Mylo, Bloc Party, DFA1979, Chemical Brothers & Franz Ferdinand); with Erol being voted Mixmag’s ‘DJ Of The Year’ and ‘Best International Dj’ and even being called up to support both Madonna and Daft Punk!

Erol’s label ‘Phantasy Sound’ has put out tracks from Chilly Gonzales, Riton, Primary 1, Boris Dlugosch & Late Of The Pier; and to date Alkan has acted as album producer for Late Of The Pier, Mystery Jets & The Long Blondes.
More recently he has released his collaborations with Boys Noize ‘Waves/Deathwave’ & ‘Avalanche/Lemonade’ - both of which have been picked up by the world’s top DJs.
Add to this the warped balearic psychedelic brotherhood of ‘Beyond The Wizards Sleeve’ and his work as the mysterious 'Mustapha3000'.

Until you’ve borne witness to one of his legendary DJ sets, poured headily over one of his meticulously crafted productions, or been catapulted to a sudden sonic nirvana by the dropping of one of his remixes, you might be justified for dismissing his existence as an extremely elaborate myth of the musical underground. After all, how can one man, still in his early thirties, have kept so many kids dancing for so long?

Check out this video interview with Erol Alkan by Potter (from Late Of The Pier) at dollop last year:

Erol has been playing at Stealth since its opening in 2004, and every time he has surpassed expectations. Here is a little clip of the end of his last set at Stealth - taken at dollop at the beginning of the year:

SKREAM at Stealth (26.11.10)

SKREAM (aka Oliver Jones) is regarded as one of Dubstep's first and most prominent producers, he has played an important role in the genre's development.

As a teenager, Jones worked at the centre of the early dubstep scene - the (now) legendary 'Big Apple Records' in Croydon.

Jones began producing music at the age of 15 and claims to now have roughly 8000 songs in varying stages of development. The 2005 Skream track "Midnight Request Line" has been described as "dubstep's most recognizable crossover hit," bringing the genre to the attention of the mainstream via producers such as Wiley and Ricardo Villalobos.

In 2009, he rose to further prominence when his remix of "In for the Kill" by La Roux became firstly an underground hit in the early part of the year before bursting onto the mainstream, gaining daytime radio play and hitting the pop charts.

2010 as been Skream's busiest year to date - releasing his second full-length album 'Outside the Box', and also the Magnetic Man LP (alongside producers Benga & Artwork).

Skream is also a very generous man, reguarly offering out his tunes for free !!! In case you missed them here are links to Freeism Vol 1, Freeizm Vol 2 & Freeizm Vol 3.

Also check out his Soundcloud page to listen to Skream's remixes for Lethal Bizzle, Chromeo, Donaeo and Ms Dynamite:

MUMDANCE (Mad Decent / Trouble & Bass)
In today’s music world every man and their dog is embracing eclecticism. Yet can anyone name a DJ capable of playing both grime rave Dirty Canvas and hipster disco Bugged Out! in one weekend? Or a producer as adept in the studio with tech house heavyweight Brodinski as indie-singer Esser, and grime MC Jammer?

Step forward Mumdance, or Jack Adams, a 26-year-old producer and DJ from Brighton, whose trademark raw, riotous rhythms – drawn from Grime, UK funky, Brazilian baile funk, Caribbean calypso, American Baltimore Gutter, Afro-beat, High life, and Latin ghetto music such as tribal guarachero - have been electrifying dancefloors worldwide over the last couple of years, providing him with a hectic DJ schedule which criss-crosses the globe from Australia, Mexico, North America, Europe & all over the UK.

It all began with Jack’s bootleg (right-click to 'save as') of Diplo’s remix of Black Lips in early 2008, which was championed by tastemakers including Diplo, Annie Mac, Sinden and Switch. Diplo (who was key in breaking MIA, Santigold and Spank Rock) took Jack under his wing and asked him to remix Santigold’s Creator for smash mixtape ‘Top Ranking’.

For a FREE DOWNLOAD of the 2008-2009 Mumdance remixes (for the likes of Black Lips, Daedelus, Evil Nine, Gucci Mane, Radioclit, Santigold, Silverlink & The Whip) click here.

Mumdance has since followed in the footsteps of Rusko, Buraka Som Sistema & Major Lazer by releasing an EP on Diplo’s Mad Decent label. His 'Mumdance EP' was released back in the Autumn, moving him out of the realm of the remix and firmly into his own original productions.

The EP features grime MC Badness on the soca crazy ‘Sacrifice’; vocalist Esser on the even more tropical ‘Don’t Forget Me Now’, and to top it off the EP closes with the dancefloor friendly ‘Smasher'.

Check out Mumdance's version of Wookie's classic garage track 'Battle' (which is available for FREE DOWNLOAD by clicking here).

Sub Focus at Stealth for Detonate

This Friday Detonate are throwing another massive party at Stealth & The Rescue Rooms.

We are pleased to welcome back one of the biggest names in Drum & Bass, Dubstep & Electro - SUB FOCUS !!

Sub Focus (aka.
Nicholas Douwma) has had a massive year following the release of his debut album on Ram Records, which spawned the hit singles 'Rock It', 'Splash' & 'Could This Be Real'.

And as if that is not enough he has also remixed the likes of The Prodigy, Deadmau5, Empire Of The Sun & Dizzee Rascal; and produced tracks for Example - including his #3 chart hit "Kickstarts".

Check out some of Sub Focus' biggest tracks:

Sub Focus - X-Ray

Sub Focus - Timewarp

Sub Focus - Airplane

Sub Focus - Rock It

Sub Focus - Splash

Sub Focus - Could This Be Real

From hearing one of his tracks for the first time inside a club in 2003 ('Strobe', rewound twice by Andy C at The End) to headlining Glastonbury in 2010, Sub Focus' rise through the ranks of underground jungle to become a major player in electronic music has been nothing short of spectacular. Initially known for air-punching, dancefloor dismantling drum & bass, Sub Focus has now become synonymous with music that draws from all corners of the electronic landscape, and has come to epitomise the ‘anything goes’ mantra of todays flourishing dance scene.

Here is a video taken of Sub Focus's set at Stealth in January this year:

MARTELO (Cheap Thrills / Yo Yo)
Like most people that move around a lot as a child, Martelo sees the world with wide eyes and takes influence from all aspects of life. Growing up on Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Paul Simon, his teenage years saw him delve into everything from punk and grunge to drum 'n' bass, garage and hip hop; an eclectic array of music that has no doubt had an influence on his music taste and DJ/production style.

"I guess I play world music, but not the snobby stuff. Hood music from the global underground.. from the favelas to the projects to the tower blocks"

Martelo was grafting on the Sony/BMG street team and DJing on promo tours for Justin Timberlake, 50 cent, DMX and Destiny's Child as well as holding down a weekly residency at Ministry of Sound and two shows on pirate stations Freeze and Bassline all by the age of 20.

In the years since then he has become known as part of the yOyO family who consistently blow the roof off any party they throw, with Martelo being an ever-present on these memorable occasions. He has been the International Tour DJ for Santigold since 2007, as recommended by Diplo, and has played festivals all over the planet from Coachella (LA) to Summersonic (Japan) to Field Day (Aus) right back to Glastonbury (England).

Last year alone he was asked to open up for Jay-Z twice and was said to be a major highlight at 2009's Exit fetsival in Serbia. He is also part of "The End Of The World" with Toddla T and Oneman, they toured europe in 2009 and look set to repeat that in 2011.

JOY ORBISON
“Cool” uncles have always gotten kids into all kinds of wonderful mischief, but 22-year-old Peter O’Grady from London , better known as Joy Orbison, was especially blessed—he credits uncle Ray Keith with introducing him to jungle and U.K. garage long before he could ever hit the clubs. At the age of 13 he took up DJing and eventually moved into production, beginning with Fruity Loops-crafted 8-bar grime loops before shifting into headier territory that combined his love of house, disco, and dubstep with the atmospheric fuzz of bands like My Bloody Valentine, Josef K, and The Beach Boys. His debut single “Hyph Mngo” has become the forward-thinking dubstep/2-step tune of 2009, and was followed by “BRKL CLLN” on O’Grady’s own Doldrums label, which he runs in tandem with partner Impey.

As former editor of the popular future-culture glossy XLR8R, few DJs know their stuff like Star Eyes (aka. Vivian Host). With Drop the Lime, Brooklyn's bad girl Star Eyes is a founding member of the world-famous Trouble & Bass crew and record label.

Star Eyes is known for throwing down raw, dirty underground tracks, from grime bangers to ghetto house, Miami bass classics to speaker-rattling dubstep. This veteran of the decks played drum & bass exclusively for 10 years, and was a member of the B.A.S.S. She has played all over the world: Vans Warped Tour, Fabric London, Paris Social Club, Zouk Singapore, Insomniac LA, and the illest squats and underground parties from Queens to Cape Town. She releases on Trouble & Bass Recordings, and has done vocals for Drum & Bass star John B (Beta) and Passions (Kitsuné).

DJ MEHDI (Ed Banger) Interview

In advance of tonight's show at dollop we have managed to grab a few words with Parisian DJ superstar - DJ MEHDI.

After working as a hip-hop producer with the likes of MC Solaar, Asian Dub Foundation and Futura 3000, DJ Mehdi joined forces with Pedro 'Busy P' Winter in 1997, hosting a very successful monthly hip-hop / electro club night at former Paris nightspot Pulp.

This friendship resulted in Busy P signing Mehdi up to his Ed Banger label, culmating in the release of the 'Lucky Boy' LP in 2006. The album featured the classic tracks 'Signatune' (which was re-edited by Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter) and 'I Am Somebody' (featuring Chromeo).

More recently, Dj Mehdi has been part of a group of friends and DJ's collectively known as Club 75 which includes Cassius, Busy P and Xavier de Ronsay (Justice).

Where are you now?

Squatters (San City High) Interview

Kissy Sell Out's San City High Tour rolls into town tonight at Stealth, and we managed to grab a quick chat with some of the acts in advance of the show. First up - The Squatters!

THE SQUATTERS
(aka Oliver Portamento & Alex Powell) have been working together for many years not just as DJs but also as successful promoters, event organisers & producers. Taking influences from Oldskool Hip Hop & Rave then fusing it with today’s modern House, Electro & more experimental genres such as Dub Step, Drum n’ Bass & even Trance. By cut n’ pasting these together, adding chopped vocals & colossal breakdowns they have created a unique big room sound that has closed the ranks between the styles which makes a heavyweight impact on the dance floor.

There productions & remixes have received consistent airing by BBC Radio 1 and Kiss FM, as well as support from a countless list of elite radio & club DJs (see the feedback above from DJ Zinc, Doorly, AC Slater & Villa).

The Squatters are working hard on new productions & remixes, but we managed to grab a quick word with Oli from the duo:
